How to approach another creator for a collaboration

Approach another creator with a short message that names who you are, the piece you want to make, and why their audience fits. One concrete idea is enough. A vague “let’s collab” is easy to ignore.

A message you can adapt

Hi — I’m [name], a [niche] creator on [platform] in [city]. I liked [one specific post or video]. I’m planning a [format] about [topic] and think your audience would find it useful because [one reason]. Would you be open to collaborating? I can send a short brief with the format, timing, and who does what.

What to include

  1. Your name, niche, platform, and city.
  2. One piece of their work you actually watched or read.
  3. The format and topic, in a single sentence.
  4. Why the pairing helps their audience, not only yours.
  5. An offer to send a one-page brief. Do not attach a long deck to the first message.

What to leave out

Do not open with only “love your content” or a request to “shout each other out.”

Do not hide a paid promotion inside a collaboration request. If a brand is paying, say so.

Do not ask them to make the whole piece and tag you. Say what you will do.

What if they do not reply?

Send one follow-up after about a week, with the same idea and no guilt. Then move on. A second idea for a different creator is more useful than a third message to the same person.

Should I ask for their rate in the first message?

Only if you are offering paid work. For a peer collaboration, talk about the format and the split of work first. Bring up money when someone is being hired, hosted, or covering costs.
